People warned me before I went that because Malaysia is a Muslim country and being gay is against the law, I should be careful about telling people about my sexuality. Thank god I didn’t listen. I minced around in short shorts, and told everyone who cared enough to ask – nobody even batted an eyelid. The people are the loveliest I’ve ever met, the food was amazing, despite most people telling me it would be rubbish, and the city skyline is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, especially at night.
In the past 10 months, I’ve managed to save around £5500 earning minimum wage, with still another 13 months to go before departing on my round the world adventure, with some trips abroad in between. I didn’t find it difficult, because after the first few months I began to realize that nothing i could purchase (apart from a plane ticket of course) could make me happy. No – not a brand new iPhone, new clothes or even that rip off £4 latte that I could have made at home for next to nothing. To truly hit your travel savings goal, you need to look at every aspect of your life and find a way to make it cheaper. Here are some things I did myself to save money for travel.
